Welcome to the Emmett Till Blog - a place where your opinion counts

Welcome to the official Emmett Till Blog home of Susan Klopfer, civil rights, diversity author and speaker. Thank you so much to the thousands of you who have read my Emmett Till and civil rights books in paperback and eBooks.

Let's use this site to share strange, wonderful, touching and intriguing civil rights news and history. Don't be afraid to comment. I have LOTS of opinions, and I know that you do, too.

I started this blog after leaving the Land of Emmett Till in the Mississippi Delta. I wanted to share the experiences I had there, hoping others will believe in the importance of sharing this important history.

Intelligent and bold, with a slight mischievous streak, Emmett Till had experienced segregation in his hometown of Chicago, but he was unaccustomed to the severe segregation he encountered in Mississippi. When he showed some local boys a picture of a white girl who was one of his friends back home and bragged that she was his girlfriend, one of them said, "Hey, there's a [white] girl in that store there. I bet you won't go in there and talk to her." Emmett went in and bought some candy. As he left, he said "Bye baby" to Carolyn Bryant, the wife of the store owner.”

http://www.heroism.org/class/1950/heroes/till.htm The Lynching of Emmett Till: The horrific death of a Chicago teenager helped spark the civil rights movement This site gives a quick overview: “In the segregated South, punishment for a black male who made a sexual suggestion a white woman was swift. Word got around about what had happened and Emmett's relatives suggested he get out of town as fast as possible.”

Many civil rights activists say seeing those pictures both haunted and inspired them. NPR's Noah Adams reports on the decision to publish the photos and the wide-ranging effect they had.

Emmett Till Blog; Dedicated to Mississippi Civil Rights

Welcome to this blog. I lived in the Mississippi Delta for several years, near the town where Emmett Till was taken and beaten before he was thrown into the Tallahatchie River. People in Sunflower County, today, still recall this ominous crime.

What Others Say About Susan Klopfer

"Susan Klopfer, the leading authority on the history of the Mississippi civil rights movement ... Thank God for enterprising historians like Susan Klopfer who have the courage to state the obvious."

"The Iowa historian’s master work, Where Rebel’s Roost: Mississippi Civil Rights Revisited, demonstrates how opposition to the Massive Resistance movement in Mississippi during the 1950s and 60s led inevitably to harassment and, in most cases, financial ruin."

Reviews: Who Killed Emmett Till?

"Susan Klopfer, the leading authority on the history of the Mississippi civil rights movement...Thank God for enterprising historians like Susan Klopfer who have the courage to state the obvious." Alan Bean, Ph.D., Friends of Justice

"Susan Klopfer has conducted in-depth personal research for her civil rights writings. She has walked the land where these atrocities occurred and still occur. Susan has experienced the pain and secrecy felt in these stories as she conducted first hand interviews with relatives of victims. All well worth reading. Susan Klopfer tells it like it is, and like it was." Pat Fua, librarian

Who Killed Emmett Till? unveils not only what led to Emmett Till's violent death and the murders of thousands of African Americans in Mississippi, but addresses how these events relate to today's terrorist world, where children and adults are murdered daily for hateful reasons -- or are destroyed for directly engaging in the fight for social change. (Susan Klopfer, author)

Review By Max G. Bernard: This is a well-written and fascinating book about a vicious lynching of an African-American teenager from Chicago while visiting Mississippi. His mother insisted on an open coffin for the services so that people could see what was done to her son. The author explains the history, demands justice, talks with some of those still alive who, as she says, "still had the story fresh in their hearts and minds." After you read this book, the events will live in your heart and mind too, because she makes it come alive. This is highly recommended. (Bernard is the author of numerous ebooks, including Another Place, Another Time. His works can be found on Smashwords.com.)
